Suzuki JimnyThe Suzuki Jimny is a line of off-road vehicles from Suzuki produced since April 1970. The first Suzuki-branded 4-wheel drive, the LJ10 (Light Jeep 10), was introduced in 1970. The LJ10 had a 359 cc air-cooled, two-stroke, in-line two-cylinder engine. The liquid-cooled LJ20 was introduced in 1972 with the cooling changed due to newly enacted emission regulations, and it gained 3 hp. In 1975, Suzuki complemented the LJ20 with the LJ50, which had a larger 539 cc, two-stroke, in-line three-cylinder engine and bigger differentials.
The Jimny8/LJ80 was anupdated version of the LJ50 with an 800 cc, four-stroke, in-line four-cylinder engine, followed by the Jimny 1000/SJ410 and Jimny 1300/SJ413. Anupdated version of the SJ413 became known as the Samurai and was the first Suzuki officially marketed in the US. The series from SJ410 to SJ413 was known as the Sierra in Australia, and remained the Jimny in some markets. The new Jimny was released in 1998, and now bears the same name in all markets.

The Suzuki Jimny was an off-road vehicle that began in 1970. This was a popular car and if you happen to have one, then the Suzuki Jimny service manual will be an asset. The Jimny was original designed to be a kei car, the lightest weight car legal in Japan. From 197-1981, Suzuki sold the Jimny, their first global success with an off-road vehicle. This first generation was compiled of different vehicles and parts from different manufacturers.By 1981 though, Suzuki was ready to release the second generation. Produced in Japan, the Jimny was available with both a 550cc engine and a 660cc 3-cylinder engine. In 1982, Suzuki introduced the Jimny 1000 and this vehicle was intended for foreign markets. Standard on the 1000 was 4 speed manual transmission and non-power brakes.

Also available was a half door convertible long wheelbase pickup truck. In 1984, the Jimny was revamped and rebranded and ready to sell in the North American markets. It was offered to consumers as a convertible or a hardtop, and the back seat was optional. The 4-cylinder engine was standard. This version was known as the Suzuki Samurai. The Samurai had great off-road performance and reliability and became quite popular among fans of 4WD vehicles.
Even though the Samurai was a light vehicle, it was built with a transfer case, switchable 4WD and low range setting. Being a lighter weight car, also made it better for driving over softer grounds while off roading.Due to its popularity, in 1985 Suzuki revamped the Samurai to better handle regular road driving. The company redesigned it with softer suspension and a larger anti-roll bar.
A lower 5th gear helped to increase engine rpm and an improved dashboard and seats made the car more comfortable. From 1998-2018 the third generation was released. This version was larger and had a larger engine. And in May of 2018 a fourth generation began production. This latest generation was given a boxy style in a clear nod to its predecessor.Suzuki has sold the Jimny in various markets around the world. Today, the Jimny continues to enjoy a place in the long history of Suzuki and their kei cars. The Jimny and all of its generations can be found on roads today. It is a great off-road SUV and has a following of enthusiasts.
Any fan of the Suzuki Jimny should have the Suzuki Jimny workshop manual sitting right beside them.
